US Reseller or Direct From Korea: Running the Numbers

· ppasong

When paying a US reseller's markup is actually the better deal, and when it clearly is not.

What the markup actually is

A US reseller typically prices Korean goods at 1.8 to 2.5 times the Korean retail price. On a 20,000 KRW album that is roughly 26 to 36 USD against a Korean price of about 15. The markup covers their shipping, their handling and their margin, and it is applied per item whether you buy one or five.

Where the reseller wins

One item, needed soon. A single album direct from Korea costs about 15 USD plus 22 to 30 USD of shipping, landing at 37 to 45. The US reseller at 32 USD with domestic shipping wins outright and arrives in three days. For single small purchases, buying domestically is simply the better decision.

Where direct wins, decisively

Four or more items. Five albums direct is about 75 USD of goods plus 40 USD of shipping, or 115 total. The same five from a reseller is 160 to 180. The gap widens with every item added, because the reseller markup scales linearly while shipping does not. Anything above roughly three items should be bought direct.

The availability factor that overrides price

Resellers stock what sold well, which excludes store-exclusive versions, pre-order gifts, pop-up goods and anything limited. For those, direct purchase is not cheaper or more expensive, it is the only option. That is what most people are actually buying direct for, and price is secondary. The same is true for anything from a Korean second-hand marketplace, where the US reseller channel simply does not exist as an alternative.

Frequently asked

Established sellers generally are. Marketplace listings at prices well below the usual reseller band are the ones to question, especially for photocards.

No, because the counted sale already happened when they bought their stock. If chart contribution matters to you, direct purchase is the only route.

Yes, meaningfully. A domestic return is practical where an international one is not, which is worth real money on anything with sizing or shade risk.
