A Korean Signup Form, Field by Field

· ppasong

What each field on a typical Korean account registration asks for, and which ones you can safely skip.

The consent checkboxes at the top

Korean forms open with a block of agreement checkboxes: terms of service and privacy policy, which are mandatory, then marketing consent for email and SMS which are optional and clearly marked as such. There is usually an agree-to-all box at the top. Unchecking the optional marketing boxes has no effect on your account. Some sites also present an all-agree checkbox that silently includes marketing consent, so ticking the individual required boxes is the cleaner approach.

Identity fields

Name, date of birth and gender are standard. Below these sits the verification block, either phone verification by SMS code or the PASS app path. This is the field that determines whether you can proceed, and it is where a foreign account attempt normally ends. Date of birth is also used for age-restricted category access rather than for marketing, so an accurate entry matters on sites selling any restricted goods.

Address entry

Korean address entry uses a postal code lookup popup rather than free text. You search a road name or building, select from results, then type only the unit number. Free-typing a foreign address into these fields does not work because the postal code field validates against the Korean database. Building numbers in Korea are not sequential along a street in the way US numbering is, so guessing an address rather than searching it does not work.

Referral and optional fields

Recommender ID, how you heard about us, and interest categories are optional and safely skipped. Some sites offer a signup coupon for completing them, usually 2,000-5,000 KRW off a first order, which is worth thirty seconds if you are already there. Signup coupons also usually carry a minimum basket and a short validity window, so claiming one is only worth it if you intend to order soon.
