Some Korean sites refuse foreign IP addresses entirely. Here is why, and what it means for buying from them.
Why sites block foreign IPs
Three main reasons. Fraud rates on foreign-origin traffic are higher, and blocking is the cheapest control. Licensing agreements restrict digital content and some brand distribution to Korea. And bot traffic scraping limited-drop inventory arrives disproportionately from overseas data centers. Blocking is usually applied at the network edge rather than by the application, which is why the page fails to load rather than showing an error message.
What blocking looks like
A blank page, a timeout, a generic access denied message, or a redirect to a page explaining that service is limited to Korea. Ticketing platforms, some music and media services, and certain limited-drop retailers are the most common cases. Some sites block only checkout rather than browsing, which is more confusing since everything appears to work until the final step.
Why a VPN is not a real answer
Routing through a Korean IP may load the page, but the checkout still requires Korean identity verification and a domestic payment method, so nothing is actually gained. Many sites also detect and block commercial VPN ranges specifically, and using one to circumvent an access restriction may breach the site terms. Free VPN services in particular are almost always in blocked ranges, since they are the primary source of the automated traffic that prompted the block.
The practical position
If a site blocks foreign traffic it has decided not to serve overseas customers, and the only compliant route is a purchase made by someone in Korea. That is a service question rather than a technical one, and it is worth confirming a service can access the site before you plan an order around it. Confirming access before ordering also avoids the situation where a service accepts your request and then discovers it cannot reach the store at all.
