Korea's ceramics scene runs from mass-produced tableware to studio pottery. Here is how to buy and ship it.
Production versus studio pieces
Mass-produced Korean tableware runs 5,000-20,000 KRW per piece and is durable and dishwasher safe. Studio pottery from individual makers runs 25,000-120,000 KRW per piece, is often unglazed on the foot, and frequently comes with hand-wash-only guidance. The look is similar in photos and the pieces are not comparable.
Buying from small studios
Most Korean ceramicists sell through Instagram, small craft platforms or occasional pop-ups, with domestic-only payment and no international shipping. This is a category where a buy-for-me service is essentially the only access route for an overseas buyer.
Packing is everything
Ceramics need individual wrapping, a rigid inner box, and at least 5 cm of cushioning to the outer wall on every side. Plates should be packed on edge rather than stacked flat, since stacked plates crack under vertical load. Say this explicitly in your packing notes.
Weight reality
A dinner plate weighs 400-700 g and a stoneware bowl 300-500 g. A six-piece setting comes to 3-4 kg before packing material, and the protective packing adds meaningful volume. Budget for the shipment costing as much as the ceramics.
