Buying Korean Vintage and Secondhand Fashion

· ppasong

Seoul has a large vintage scene selling both imported and Korean-made pieces. Here is how to buy from abroad.

The two markets

Imported vintage shops in Dongdaemun and Hongdae stock American workwear, European sportswear and designer resale, priced at or above US vintage market since it has already been imported once. Korean domestic vintage, including old Korean sportswear, school uniforms and eighties tailoring, is the genuinely distinctive category and is cheap because local demand is thin. Korean vintage sellers also import in bulk bales and sort locally, so the same garment that sold in a US thrift store now carries a curated price.

Where it is sold online

Instagram shops dominate, with sellers posting a piece and taking the first comment. Bunjang carries a large used fashion section. Dedicated Korean vintage platforms exist but are small. Almost none of this has structured search, so finding a specific item means following accounts rather than searching. Live selling on Instagram is common, where a seller shows items on video and buyers claim in the comments, which requires being awake at Korean evening hours.

Sizing older Korean garments

Vintage Korean sizing predates the current numeric system and varies wildly by decade and maker. Flat measurements are the only usable information, and many Instagram sellers do not post them. Ask before buying, and expect older Korean menswear to run notably small by modern standards. Fabric and construction on older Korean garments also differs, with heavier interlinings and different sizing tolerances than modern equivalents at the same nominal size.

Condition disclosure norms

Korean vintage sellers describe condition briefly and often omit flaws that a US seller would list. Request photos of underarms, collar, cuffs and any repair. Deadstock claims are common and worth verifying with a tag photo. Photos in natural light rather than under shop lighting are worth requesting specifically, since color on vintage garments is frequently misrepresented by indoor light.
