Photobooks, DVDs and Heavy Media: What Shipping Really Costs

Typical weights, boxed
A standard album runs 300 to 500 g. A concert DVD or Blu-ray set is 700 g to 1.4 kg. A full photobook edition with a hardcover and slipcase can hit 1.2 to 2 kg on its own. A season set with a calendar, planner and photobook lands around 1.5 to 2.5 kg. One photobook can weigh as much as four albums.
What that means in dollars
On typical air rates, each additional kilogram costs roughly 8 to 12 USD depending on the tier and destination. A 1.8 kg photobook therefore carries about 15 to 22 USD of shipping on top of a 55,000 KRW price. Two of them plus a DVD set is a 5 kg box before you have added a single album.
Volumetric traps
Oversized photobooks and slipcased sets are often shipped in outer cartons far larger than the contents. Air freight bills the greater of actual and volumetric weight, so a light but bulky box can be charged at 30 to 50 percent above its scale weight. Asking for repacking into a snug box typically recovers most of that.
Ordering strategy for heavy media
Because the shipping cost of heavy items is close to fixed per item, adding light items to the same box is nearly free by comparison. If you know you want a DVD set, that is the shipment to attach your albums, cards and stickers to rather than sending them separately. The same logic works in reverse: if you only want light items this quarter, there is no reason to wait for a heavy release that would add 20 USD of freight to the box.
