Why posters arrive damaged, when to use a tube, and what the extra protection costs.
Why stores fold posters
Korean retailers ship pre-order posters folded into the album package by default, because it is cheap and domestic delivery is short. The fold is applied at the store, not by the forwarder, which means the crease already exists by the time the item reaches a Korean warehouse. If you want a poster unfolded, that has to be requested at purchase where the store offers it.
When a tube is worth it
A cardboard mailing tube adds roughly 200 to 400 g and takes up dimensional space that can push a shipment into a higher volumetric bracket. For a poster worth a few dollars, that is a bad trade. For a limited edition print or a signed piece, spending 8 to 15 USD on tube shipping to preserve full value is obviously correct.
The flat-pack alternative
For posters up to about A2, a rigid flat pack between two sheets of stiff board is lighter than a tube and avoids the curl that tubes introduce. It only works if the outer box is large enough to hold the poster flat, so it pairs well with a shipment that already contains photobooks or apparel.
Volumetric weight is the hidden cost
A tube 8 cm across and 70 cm long occupies far more space than its weight suggests, and air freight bills the greater of actual and volumetric weight. A near-empty poster tube can be charged as 3 to 4 kg. If you are sending a tube, fill the remaining length with other rolled items rather than air.
