The categories that matter
Batteries contained in equipment, such as a device with a built-in cell, are the most permissive category. Batteries packed with equipment, meaning a device with a spare battery in the same box, are more restricted. Standalone batteries and power banks shipped alone are the most restricted and are refused by most consumer parcel services. Rules also differ between passenger and cargo aircraft, and consumer parcel services generally apply the stricter passenger-aircraft standard by default.
The watt-hour thresholds
Lithium-ion cells above 20 watt-hours and batteries above 100 watt-hours move into higher regulatory tiers requiring dangerous goods handling. Most phone and small device batteries sit well under 100 Wh. Portable power stations and large camera batteries commonly exceed it, and laptop batteries sit near the boundary. Watt-hours are calculated as voltage multiplied by amp-hours, and most consumer devices print the figure directly on the battery or in the manual.
Korean purchases commonly affected
Power banks, portable fans and heaters, LED lightsticks with rechargeable cells, camping power stations, electric beauty devices, and wireless earbuds cases. Lightsticks are the most common surprise, since many use replaceable alkaline batteries and are fine, while newer rechargeable models are not. Electric toothbrushes, hair devices and massage guns also fall into this category, and hair styling tools carry the additional problem of Korean voltage.
What to do at the warehouse
Where a battery cannot be shipped, the usual remedy is removing it and shipping the device alone, which works for products with a removable battery and does not for sealed ones. Ask before ordering rather than after, since a rejected battery becomes disposal rather than a refund. Asking the question before ordering also avoids the situation where the battery is sealed inside and the entire product becomes unshippable.
