Korean Diet and Meal Replacement Products: What to Know Before Ordering
· ppasong
Korea's diet food aisle is enormous. Here is how to read it and what the import considerations are.
The main product categories
Powdered meal replacement shakes at 25,000-60,000 KRW for a month, konjac jelly and noodle products at 1,000-3,000 KRW per serving, and protein-fortified snacks. Konjac jelly pouches are the domestic bestseller and are light, shelf-stable and easy to ship.
Where to be careful
Products marketed for weight loss sometimes contain herbal stimulants or ingredients regulated differently in the US. Anything promising rapid results deserves scrutiny of the full ingredient panel, and supplements with drug-classified ingredients cannot be imported as food.
Reading the nutrition panel
Korean panels list per serving and per 100 g, with calories in kcal. Serving sizes are often smaller than US conventions, so a snack listing 90 kcal per serving may contain three servings in the pack. Check the pack total rather than the headline figure.
Practical shipping notes
Powder tubs are bulky and heavy at 700 g to 1.5 kg. Stick-pack versions of the same product weigh less and pack flat. Konjac jelly pouches are mostly water at about 150 g each, so a case adds up quickly.

Frequently asked
Food-classified products in personal quantities are generally handled as supplements, but ingredient restrictions apply and change. Check the panel and current guidance.
Plain protein and grain powders usually do. Products with botanical extracts draw more scrutiny.
Only if you like a flavor with no US distribution. It is mostly water, so the shipping cost per pouch is high.
