Kimchi, Gochujang and Doenjang: What Can Actually Be Shipped

· ppasong

Fermented Korean foods have specific import considerations. Here is a realistic picture before you order.

Fermented pastes travel reasonably well

Gochujang, doenjang and ssamjang in sealed commercial tubs are shelf-stable and commonly shipped. A 500 g tub costs 5,000-9,000 KRW domestically versus $8-14 in US Korean groceries. The catch is weight: three tubs is roughly 1.8 kg with packaging, which eats into a shipping budget fast.

Fresh kimchi is mostly impractical

Refrigerated kimchi ferments in transit, builds gas pressure and can leak or burst. Even vacuum-sealed pouches expand. Some services will not accept it at all, and air routes with warm holds make the problem worse. Shelf-stable retort-packed kimchi is the workable alternative.

Regulatory picture

Food imports for personal use are subject to rules that differ by ingredient, particularly for anything containing meat, seafood or fresh produce. Kimchi containing salted seafood is a category worth checking specifically, and guidance is revised periodically.

Where the real value is

Regional and artisanal pastes from small Korean producers that no US importer carries. Those justify the shipping weight in a way that mass-market brands available at your local H Mart do not.

Frequently asked

Retort-packed shelf-stable versions are the practical option. Fresh refrigerated kimchi is high-risk for leakage and may be refused.

Screw-top tubs can seep at altitude. Ask for each tub to be taped around the lid and double-bagged.

Usually not for mass-market brands once shipping is added. It is worth it for products with no US distribution.
