Korean Sites That Only Work on Mobile

· ppasong

A growing share of Korean commerce is app-first with broken or absent desktop checkout. Here is how to handle it.

How the breakage manifests

Symptoms include a cart that does not persist between pages, a checkout button that opens a blank overlay, a payment step that never loads, and product links from social media that redirect to an app store page. None of these produce an error message explaining the cause. Cart persistence in particular fails silently, so an item added on desktop may simply not be there when you reach the payment page.

Why app-first happened

Korean platforms push app installs because app users convert better and can be reached by push notification. Payment integration is also simpler in-app, since wallet authentication uses the phone's biometrics directly rather than a browser redirect chain that frequently fails. Push notification is also how Korean platforms announce restocks and time deals, which means desktop users miss the announcements entirely.

Mobile browser as a partial fix

Loading the mobile site in a phone browser, or forcing a mobile user agent on desktop, restores functionality on some platforms. It works where the desktop site is merely neglected and fails where checkout genuinely requires the app for payment authentication. Desktop mode inside a phone browser sometimes works better than the reverse, since the site serves its mobile code path but with a larger viewport.

What to do with app-only listings

Capture the product URL through the app's share function, note the exact option string, and pass both to whoever is placing the order. Screenshots alone are not enough because the URL is what identifies the specific listing and seller. Some apps also generate short links that resolve only inside the app, in which case the underlying product number is the more durable identifier to record.

Frequently asked

Many are region-restricted in app stores, and those that install still hit phone verification at signup.

Sometimes for browsing, rarely for checkout. It is worth trying before assuming a site is unusable.

Some app-generated links are time-limited. Send them promptly and include the product name and seller as a backup.
