Korean Return and Exchange Policies: What Applies to a Forwarded Order

· ppasong

Korean consumer law gives strong return rights domestically. Here is how much of that survives an international order.

The domestic baseline

Korean online purchases generally carry a change-of-mind return window measured in days from delivery, with the buyer paying return shipping. Defective goods are returned at the seller's cost. These rights attach to the delivery inside Korea, not to your address abroad.

The window that actually matters

The practical return window is the period between the item arriving at the Korean warehouse and the international shipment leaving. If a problem is caught at inspection during that window, a return is entirely feasible. Once the box has flown, returning it means paying international shipping both ways, which almost never makes sense.

Categories with no return right

Opened cosmetics, innerwear, custom-made goods, perishables and anything where the seal is broken are commonly excluded, mirroring US practice. Secondhand and person-to-person sales carry no statutory return right at all.

How to use this in practice

Request inspection photos before the international leg on anything you are unsure about: fit-critical clothing, secondhand goods, fragile items and expensive purchases. That inspection is the one point where Korean return rights are still usable, and it costs little.

Frequently asked

Rarely worth it. Return shipping to Korea plus the domestic return usually exceeds the item value.

Report it immediately with photos. Some sellers will refund or send a replacement to a Korean address, which can then be forwarded.

Basic inspection is standard. Detailed checks such as fit photos or date code verification generally need to be requested per item.
