Getting Korean Food in the US When Your Local Store Does Not Carry It

· ppasong

What is worth importing, what to buy locally, and the restrictions that decide the difference.

What US Korean groceries already carry well

Instant noodles, gochujang and doenjang, dried seaweed, frozen dumplings, common snacks and rice. These are imported at container scale and cost a fraction of what air freight would add. Buying these from Korea directly is paying roughly 9 to 12 USD per kilogram of shipping for something already on a shelf near you.

What is genuinely worth importing

Regional specialty products, small-brand traditional sauces and pastes, seasonal items that never enter the US distribution chain, and limited-edition convenience store snacks that are gone in Korea within a season. These are the products where no US alternative exists at any price. Convenience store collaboration snacks in particular have a shelf life of a single season in Korea and never enter US distribution at all, which is why they dominate most import lists.

The restriction list that decides the cart

Meat and meat-containing products, fresh produce, eggs and dairy are the categories that cause seizures. This eliminates a lot of what people most miss. Shelf-stable, commercially packaged, plant-based and seafood-free items are the safest, and everything should retain its original labeling with a visible ingredient list. Instant products with a separate seasoning sachet are the most common surprise, since the sachet rather than the noodle carries the restricted ingredient.

Weight is the whole argument

Sauces and pastes are dense: a 500 g jar plus packaging is close to 700 g of billable weight, so a six-jar order is 4 kg and 40 to 55 USD of shipping. Favor dry, light and concentrated items. A box of powdered soup bases and dried goods delivers far more meals per kilogram than a box of jars.

Frequently asked

That is exactly the case that gets held. Many popular instant products contain meat-derived seasoning, and they are treated as meat products regardless of the tiny quantity.

Not for personal quantities, but accurate declaration and an intact original ingredient list make inspection go smoothly. Repackaged or unlabeled food is the problem case.

Per kilogram yes, and for shelf-stable goods with long expiry it works well. Check expiry dates before ordering in bulk, since Korean snack products often have shorter shelf lives than US equivalents.
