Korean packaging shows manufacture dates, expiry dates and PAO symbols differently from US products. Here is how to read them.
Manufacture date versus expiry date
Korean packaging often prints the manufacture date rather than the expiry. The Korean characters for manufactured and for use-by appear right before the numbers. Dates are written year, month, day, so 20260315 means March 15, 2026. If only one date is printed and no label word appears, it is usually the manufacture date.
The PAO symbol
The small open-jar icon with a number and M inside, such as 12M, means the product should be used within that many months after opening. Korean and EU conventions match here. Most Korean skincare shows 6M to 12M, and ampoules with unstable actives sometimes show 3M.
What a good date looks like on arrival
Korean retailers move stock quickly, so a product manufactured within the last 6-12 months is normal. If a heavily discounted item arrives with a manufacture date over two years old, that is usually why it was discounted. Ask for date verification before shipping if you are buying clearance stock.
Shelf life in practice
Unopened Korean skincare is typically formulated for about 30-36 months from manufacture. Sunscreen and vitamin C derivatives are the two categories where age matters most, so buy those in quantities you will actually finish within a year.
