Buying Korean Red Ginseng: Grades, Formats and What You Are Paying For

· ppasong

Red ginseng is Korea's flagship health product. Here is how the grading works and which format suits shipping.

Cultivation years and grade

Six-year root commands the highest prices and is the standard reference point, with four and five-year roots cheaper. Whole roots are graded by shape and density, with the top grades priced for gifting rather than consumption. A gift-grade whole root box can run 200,000-600,000 KRW, while everyday extract sits far below that.

Formats and what ships best

Stick pouches and tablets are light, sealed and travel easily, typically 40,000-120,000 KRW for a 30-day supply. Glass jars of concentrate are heavy and breakable. Whole roots in a presentation box are bulky and mostly packaging. For shipping purposes, stick pouches win by a wide margin.

Reading the concentrate percentage

Extract products state the ginseng concentrate percentage. A high-percentage concentrate at 60% or above is a different product from a drink at 5% ginseng extract with sugar and jujube making up the rest. The front label rarely distinguishes them, so read the nutrition panel.

Regulatory note

Ginseng products are regulated as supplements or food depending on formulation, and import guidance changes. Keep quantities to personal use and check current rules before ordering a large gift set.

Frequently asked

It commands the highest price by convention and grading, though the practical difference for everyday extract products is smaller than the price gap suggests.

Stick pouches. A 30-day box weighs about 400-500 g, against 1.5-2 kg for a concentrate jar in a presentation box.

Usually, but the box is mostly air and satin lining. Ask whether the presentation box can be removed to cut volumetric weight.
