Korean Cookware: Stainless, Ttukbaegi and What Survives the Trip

· ppasong

Korean pots, pans and stone bowls, with a realistic look at weight and breakage.

The items with no US substitute

Ttukbaegi earthenware bowls for stew, thin stainless ramen pots with side handles, and Korean-style perforated steamers. A ramen pot costs 8,000-18,000 KRW and weighs 300-500 g, which is manageable. Ttukbaegi are 10,000-30,000 KRW but heavy at 800 g to 1.5 kg and genuinely fragile.

Weight is the whole calculation

A single stainless pot set can add 3-5 kg to a box. At typical air rates that is often more than the cookware cost. Unless the specific piece is unavailable in the US, cookware is the category where buying locally usually wins.

Packing earthenware

Ttukbaegi crack from impact and from thermal shock. They should be wrapped individually in thick padding, boxed with at least 5 cm of cushioning on all sides, and never packed at the bottom under heavier goods. Ask about this explicitly.

Electric cookware is a separate problem

Korean rice cookers, electric grills and induction plates are 220V appliances. A step-down transformer sized for a 1,000W rice cooker is bulky and expensive, and the cooker's electronics may still behave unpredictably. This is one of the least practical Korean import categories.

Frequently asked

With proper padding, usually. Without it, breakage is common. It is worth asking for photos of the packing before it ships.

It is generally thin-gauge and designed for fast heating rather than heat retention, which suits Korean cooking. It is not inherently better, just different.

Only with a suitable step-down transformer, and even then features may not work as intended. Most people are better served buying a US-market model.
